Gwen with birthday cake and flowers celebrating with friends and family on 23rd April – her 90th birthday!

Gillingham girl Gwen Fry celebrated her 90th birthday with visits from family and friends and a special birthday cake made by the chef at St Martins care home where she has lived since 2008.

Gwen was born in Gillingham and was the youngest of six children. She worked as a housekeeper in the town and when the War broke out she worked at the military hospital in Guys Marsh for the duration.

Gwen married local farm worker Tom in 1943 before he went away to serve in the war. When he returned he worked on the railways, and Gwen has happy memories of free days out on the train to Sidmouth and Seaton.
