Care South Sussexdown residents enjoy Dutch Day

Residents at Care South Sussexdown residential and nursing home in Storrington celebrated the 38th Operation Manna with the Royal Airforce Association (RAFA) Amsterdam Branch and the annual cheesedrop in June 2009. Dame Vera Lynn and His Excellency, Mr Pim Waldeck, Netherlands Ambassador and Mrs Cordula Waldeck as well as Sussexdown residents, friends, family and staff were among 170 guests who attended the annual RAFA Amsterdam’s cheese drop to see the miniature Edam cheeses floating down on tiny parachutes into the Sussexdown gardens.

The glorious sunny day provided the perfect flying weather and everyone enjoyed the excellent flying displays by Rod Dean in the Mark R1X Spitfire, Justyn Gorman in his Extra 300 and the Provost which came from RN Yeovilton flown by John Beattie.

These displays were then followed by three aircraft piloted by members of ‘The Edambusters’ from the Amsterdam branch who gave a nice formation display prior to dropping cheeses into the area by parachute.

Richard Hawes, Director of Care South said it was by far the best event to date they had attended since they took the home over three years ago. He added – “It will be a pity to see this event end which is steeped in history – due to lack of funds and membership of the Amsterdam Branch – and we at Care South will do all we can to see that it carries on.”

Malcolm Mason MBE organiser said,”It would be ideal if there can be a Cheese drop in 2010 and we will do our utmost to support Care South in finding sponsors to continue this important tribute to all involved in Operation Manna.
