More than just a job for Talbot View’s Selina

Talbot View is a modern purpose built residential and dementia care home in Ensbury Park, north Bournemouth. It is close to Talbot Woods and the open spaces of Ensbury Park. We offer high standards of individual care and our staff will always go that extra mile to meet our residents’ needs.

It is a special year for Selina Christie, a young senior care assistant from Bournemouth. Not only did she recently get married, she is also a finalist for the title Carer of the Year in the Great South West Care Awards. Winners will be announced at a gala event in Bristol on 4 November. If Selina  wins she will go forward as a finalist in the Great British Care Awards. “It is such an achievement to reach the regional finals and a real confidence boost,” says Selina, 24. “But I am just doing a job that I really love.” Selina joined the staff at Talbot View residential care home as a domestic assistant on leaving school and found she enjoyed being with the home’s elderly residents. Two years later she was appointed as a care assistant. “She immediately began to shine in this role,” says Nick Holman, home manager of Talbot View. “Because of her enthusiasm she was put forward as a Care Ambassador, encouraging other young people to join the caring profession.” Selina was this year made a senior care assistant, and has proved that she sees her work is more than just a job. She and another staff member recently camped in the garden of Talbot View for 72 hours, “earning” food by completing challenges, and raised £500 for the home’s amenities fund which pays for entertainment, outings, and activities for the residents. Nick Holman gives another example of Selina’s dedication: “One of our gentleman residents decided to explore and left the building unaccompanied. As soon as Selina heard about it she interrupted her dinner party and insisted her fiancée drive her around the area until she discovered his whereabouts and returned him safe and happy to the home!” Selina definitely feels a bond with Talbot View. “I went to Glenmoor School which is just over the road from Talbot View, and some of the residents who used to live locally have seen me grow up,” she says. Talbot View is one of 16 care homes in Dorset operated by Poole-based Care South, a leading provider of high quality residential and home care services in the south of England.
