What a proposal!

Marc says: “Then I got down on one knee and asked if she would make me the happiest man in the world. Luckily she said Yes and the band struck up Congratulations. They were all prepared to play the theme from The Great Escape if she had said No!”

When Marc Butler, a Care Team Manager at The Fearnes, proposed to his girlfriend Claire Henderson on her birthday on New Year’s Eve he did it with the help of a marching band!

Marc is a member of the Bournemouth Carnival Band and put his plan into action after he had a dream that he would propose in this way.

The 17-strong band, all dressed as Spiderman, marched to the drum beat to Claire’s house, then played Happy Birthday followed by Oh You Beautiful Doll.

Marc says: “Then I got down on one knee and asked if she would make me the happiest man in the world. Luckily she said Yes and the band struck up Congratulations. They were all prepared to play the theme from The Great Escape if she had said No!”

Marc and Claire, a Housing Officer, have known each other since they were teenagers. They have been together for seven years and have a four year old son James together, and a daughter Rebecca, 13, Claire’s daughter from a previous relationship.

Claire said: “It was brilliant and I am so grateful to the band, who got together to do this at very short notice”. The Bournemouth Carnival Band has a lot of fun raising money for numerous childrens’ charities, and recently played at the London Taxi Drivers’ Association party for underprivileged children which they have done for the last five years.
