Remember When..? event held by Alexandra House for Alzheimer’s Day
The event at Alexandra House for Alzheimer’s Day was a special memory-based afternoon. The day featured seven vintage cars from the Austin 7 club, a cake sale, and a Memory Walk showcasing photos of past lifestyles.
The Memory Walk featured numerous photos and information about past lifestyles, along with an old-fashioned bicycle with a loaf of bread in its basket. Various vintage items, including typewriters, a Bakelite phone, and a Kodak Brownie camera, fascinated residents, families, and staff, some of whom had never seen such items before.
The open day at Alexandra House, themed “Remember When…” for World Alzheimer’s Day, included games like hopscotch, quoits, jacks, and cat’s cradle. Cakes reminiscent of the residents’ childhoods, such as rock cakes, jam tarts, and bread pudding, were served. Sarah brought a variety of old-fashioned sweets for residents and visitors to taste, prompting them to recall the names and flavours. Ann remarked, “the bread pudding is like we used to have at home.” Many residents enjoyed the vintage cars, recalling seeing them in their youth.
Singer Angus sang songs from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, encouraging everyone to sing and dance along. Karen Hodges provided support for families with loved ones affected by dementia.
Funds were raised through a tombola and cake sale for the NHS Foundation Trust, amounting to £170. The activities team plan to continue supporting the same charity at their Christmas Fayre, where a resident, accompanied by staff, will deliver the collected funds.
