Building Friendships Through Pen Pals at Talbot View
At Talbot View, meaningful connections are at the heart of everyday life. Recently, residents have been enjoying a wonderful new initiative, exchanging letters with their “pen pals” at Elizabeth House, creating friendships that span between homes.
Reigniting a love for letters
The idea began with resident Doreen, who once had a pen pal very dear to her. Knowing how much she enjoys reading and the personal connection that comes with letter writing, the team wanted to bring that experience back into her life.
Elizabeth House kindly sent the first letters to Doreen, Bryan and Geraldine, who all received them with great excitement and warmth.
Small gestures, big smiles
Doreen’s letter included a beautifully coloured picture, which she now keeps in her bedroom. She shared how much it means to her, saying it “makes me smile”, a simple yet powerful reminder of how thoughtful gestures can brighten someone’s day.
Moments like these show how even small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact.
Discovering shared interests
For Geraldine, the experience has been a lovely way to meet someone new from the comfort of her own room. Through their letters, she has discovered many shared interests with her pen pal, and the two have been enjoying writing about their hobbies, personalities and life experiences.
This sense of connection helps to build friendships and encourages meaningful conversation, even from a distance.
Strengthening friendships through shared experiences
Bryan has also found great joy in the experience, having previously met his pen pal at an inter-home event where they enjoyed singing together. Now, through their letters, they are continuing that friendship, sharing hobbies and even planning what they might do when they meet again.
These ongoing connections help to create a sense of anticipation and belonging, bringing people closer together.
Creating connections that matter
At Talbot View, initiatives like this are about more than just letter writing. They are about building relationships, sparking joy and helping residents feel connected, both within their home and beyond.
The pen pal experience has brought laughter, excitement and companionship, showing how meaningful communication can be at any stage of life.
