A Scottish celebration for Burns Night at Buxton House
The residents of Buxton House enthusiastically participated in the Burns Night celebrations, an annual event commemorating the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns. The festivities kicked off with a traditional Scottish meal that included haggis, a savoury pudding made of sheep’s lites, mixed with oatmeal and spices, accompanied by “neeps and tatties,” which are mashed turnips and potatoes.
As part of the ceremonial feast, the residents honoured the haggis by reciting Robert Burns’ poem “Address to a Haggis,” a tribute to Scotland’s national dish. This recitation, a hallmark of Burns Night, added a touch of authenticity and reverence to the occasion. Following the poetic homage, participants enjoyed a “wee dram” of whisky, savouring the rich and distinctive flavours of Scotland’s renowned spirit. Complementing the whisky was a delightful spread of shortbread biscuits, adding a sweet note to the culinary experience.
The evening’s entertainment featured traditional Scottish music, including the lively Gay Gordons, a popular Scottish country dance. Pat and Jin, two enthusiastic residents, led the dance floor, showcasing their skills and encouraging others to join in the merriment. The infectious rhythm and spirited atmosphere brought everyone together, creating a sense of camaraderie and celebration.
