Buxton House Residents Team Up with Nursery Children for Sunflower Challenge
Residents at Buxton House enjoyed a wonderful intergenerational gardening session this week as they welcomed children from Little Firs Nursery to help plant sunflower seeds and bedding plants in the home’s gardens.
The special visit brought together residents and young visitors for a morning filled with teamwork, conversation and plenty of excitement as they got their hands dirty helping to brighten up the outdoor spaces.
The planting session forms part of Care South’s participation in Lewis-Manning Hospice Care’s Grow Some Sunshine campaign, where Care South homes are competing to grow the tallest sunflower from the charity’s sunflower seed packets.
This year, the team at Buxton House decided to make the challenge even more special by inviting children from Little Firs Nursery to join residents in planting the seeds together.
Residents Dave, Geoff, June and Oriel were delighted to work alongside the enthusiastic young gardeners, with both generations eager to give their sunflower seeds the very best start in life. Together they carefully sowed seeds, planted colourful bedding plants and discussed what would be needed to help their sunflowers grow tall and strong over the coming months.
The activity sparked meaningful conversations throughout the morning, with residents sharing gardening memories, tips and advice gathered over many years, while the children listened attentively and enthusiastically asked questions.
The session provided a wonderful opportunity for different generations to learn from one another while building friendships and sharing experiences. The gardens were soon filled with laughter, conversation and a shared sense of achievement as residents and children worked side by side.
Intergenerational activities are an important part of life at Buxton House, helping to foster community connections, support wellbeing and create meaningful experiences for residents and visitors alike.
Now the challenge begins as everyone waits to see whose sunflower will reach the greatest height. Residents and children are already looking forward to watching the seeds grow and hoping that Buxton House will be crowned Care South’s sunflower champions.
