Clare intrigues residents of Castle Dene care home with her Curiosity Case

Castle Dene care home residents had a lovely afternoon with Clare from the Curiosity Case and the topic was food and drink. Residents enjoyed a trip down memory lane remembering how the first cookbooks became widely available. These also contained household tips. Mrs. Beeton was one of the earlier cookery books and for many years, the most well-known.

Residents recalled how brands such as Cross & Blackwell started in the 1950’s and are still going today. There was a discussion about flavoured crisps and how the original flavours, plain and ready salted available for the first time in the 1950’s, have blossomed into a vast range of flavours.

The session also included many visual items from copper kettles, metal plates and an old design of apron that the women used to wear in the house. There were old cookery books which contained newspaper cuttings from the 50’s and 60’s and which our residents found very interesting.

Other topics remembered were how coronation chicken was a recipe made following a competition for the Queen’s Coronation, and how the first burger bar and fish fingers were invented in the 1950’s. Cadbury Cream eggs were first introduced in the 1960’s along with KFC opening its first shop.

Among the items on display were a set of Homepride salt and pepper pots. These brought back many memories, especially for the ladies who fondly recalled using Homepride flour

Another nostalgic item was an old glass milk bottle. Everyone remembered how milk was delivered to your doorstep, with the cream freezing in winter. If you didn’t bring the bottles in quickly enough, birds would peck the foil to drink the cream. They also recalled how butchers and bakers delivered items, with the delivery person riding a push bike. Another delivery was from the Corona man, who brought bottles of fizzy drinks and paid you for returning the empty bottles.

Along with remembering all these lovely things the residents also enjoyed a singalong with some old songs, Hey good looking what you got cooking, Sugar Sugar and Tea for Two.

Everyone agreed they had a lovely afternoon and are looking forward to finding out  what the topic will be for next month’s session.
