Castle Dene residents bring the beach indoors for Sandcastle Day
Residents at Castle Dene in Bournemouth enjoyed a wonderful trip down memory lane as they celebrated Sandcastle Day by creating their own seaside-inspired artwork and sharing cherished memories of holidays by the coast.
Although a visit to the beach wasn’t possible, the team transformed the activity room into a creative seaside setting where residents could enjoy all the fun and nostalgia of a day by the sea from the comfort of their home.
Using a variety of textured sandpaper, residents carefully crafted their own sandcastle pictures before decorating them with colourful shells. The different textures added a sensory element to the activity, encouraging conversation, creativity and reminiscence throughout the session.
As they worked on their artwork, residents reflected on happy memories of family holidays, building sandcastles with children and grandchildren, paddling in the sea and spending sunny afternoons on beaches across the UK and abroad. Stories of beautiful coastlines, favourite holiday destinations and treasured moments by the sea filled the room, with many smiles and plenty of laughter shared along the way.
The reminiscence activity proved to be just as meaningful as the creative craft itself, helping residents reconnect with positive memories and encouraging social interaction with friends and team members.
Becky, Activities lead at Castle Dene said:
“We may not have been able to take everyone to the beach, but it was lovely to bring a little bit of the seaside to our residents instead. The activity sparked so many wonderful conversations about holidays, childhood memories and time spent with loved ones. Seeing everyone smiling as they shared their stories made the day really special.”
At Castle Dene, meaningful activities are designed around residents’ interests and life experiences, supporting wellbeing while creating opportunities for friendship, conversation and enjoyment. Whether through arts and crafts, music, reminiscence or seasonal celebrations, every activity is carefully planned to help residents continue making happy memories together.
