Celebrating Chinese New Year at St Ives House

Residents at St Ives House have enjoyed a vibrant and meaningful celebration to mark Chinese New Year, embracing culture, creativity and, of course, delicious food.

Learning About the Chinese Zodiac

The day began with an engaging information session all about the Chinese zodiac calendar. Residents enjoyed learning more about the traditions and symbolism behind the lunar new year, with a particular focus on the Year of the Horse for 2026.

There were thoughtful discussions about what the different zodiac animals represent and how the calendar plays an important role in Chinese culture. It was a wonderful opportunity to explore something new together and spark curiosity.

Creative Decorations and Preparation

Following the morning session, residents took part in arts and crafts, creating colourful decorations to brighten the home. Lanterns and placemats were carefully made and displayed in readiness for the lunchtime celebrations.

The activity room was filled with concentration, laughter and creativity as everyone added their own personal touch. Seeing the finished decorations displayed around the dining area made the celebration feel even more special.

A Traditional Chinese Banquet

The highlight of the day was a traditional Chinese banquet prepared by Head Chef Jim. Residents were treated to a selection of home made dishes, giving everyone the chance to try new flavours and enjoy a shared dining experience.

Residents commented on how much they enjoyed the meal and appreciated the care that had gone into preparing it. Pam was so impressed that she personally thanked Jim for the wonderful lunch and shared how much she is looking forward to trying more dishes in the future.

Looking Ahead to ‘Around the World’ Days

The celebrations are just the beginning. The activities team are planning a series of ‘Around the World’ themed days throughout the year, giving residents the chance to explore different cultures through food, learning and creative activities.
