Doggy Date Day Brings Smiles and Memories to Wickmeads

Many residents at Wickmeads are lifelong animal lovers and often enjoy reminiscing about the pets they once had in their own homes. Dogs, in particular, are frequently spoken about as true members of the family, holding very special places in residents’ hearts and memories.

February 3 is recognised in America as Doggy Date Night, a day dedicated to celebrating canine companions with extra treats and affection. Not to be outdone, Wickmeads put its own heartfelt twist on the occasion by turning it into Doggy Date Day, welcoming Misty, our much loved therapy dog, for a morning full of cuddles, conversation and joy.

A Morning of Connection and Companionship

Misty’s first visit of the day was to Audrey, who grew up on a farm and fondly recalls the working dogs she knew on the land. As Misty is a Border Collie, the connection was immediate. Audrey shared her stories warmly, chatting to Misty as if she understood every word, which only added to the magic of the moment.

Next, Misty made her way to Jeanne, who is often found enjoying jigsaw puzzles. Jeanne particularly loves animal themed puzzles featuring dogs and cats, so having Misty sit beside her felt very special. She happily told Misty all about the latest puzzle she was hoping to finish before lunchtime.

Familiar Faces and Fond Memories

Ivan greeted Misty with a big smile. Dogs often seem to gravitate towards him, perhaps sensing his love for them. Ivan spoke fondly about his daughter’s dog, who visits him regularly and always receives plenty of fuss and attention.

Pat also enjoyed her time with Misty, chatting away as Misty listened intently, gazing up at her with those unmistakably gentle eyes that seem to invite conversation and calm.

Spreading Joy Around the Home

The visit did not stop in the lounges. Misty also visited residents in their rooms, showing off her tricks of bowing and rolling over. These moments were met with delight, especially by Pip, who often talks about her family’s Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and clearly enjoyed seeing Misty’s clever display.

Looking Forward to the Next Visit

Before long, Doggy Date Day came to an end and Misty headed off for a well deserved rest, leaving behind many smiling faces and warm conversations. The joy and comfort she brings is always deeply felt by residents and staff alike.
