Residents at Dorset House have been enjoying time outdoors as the home’s Gardening Club recently took part in a fun and meaningful wildlife activity.

Bringing together nature, creativity and wellbeing, residents spent time making homemade fat balls to help attract more birds and wildlife into the home’s beautiful gardens. The hands-on activity created plenty of smiles and laughter, with everyone enjoying the chance to get involved and support local wildlife.

One resident, Brian, fully embraced the experience and particularly enjoyed the sensory side of the session, feeling the seeds and mixture in his hands as he helped shape the fat balls ready for the garden. His enthusiasm brought lots of laughter to the group and helped make the activity even more memorable.

While the finished fat balls will provide a welcome treat for visiting birds, the activity also offered a range of benefits for residents themselves. Mixing, moulding and shaping the ingredients helped support hand dexterity, coordination and gentle exercise, making it an excellent way to combine physical activity with enjoyment.

Sessions such as these are a wonderful example of how meaningful activities can support wellbeing in later life. Spending time in nature, caring for wildlife and taking part in creative tasks can all help promote relaxation, confidence and social connection.

A member of the team at Dorset House said:

“It was lovely to see residents enjoying themselves so much. There was lots of laughter throughout the session, and everyone took great pride in creating something that will benefit the birds in our garden too. It was two activities in one, with wellbeing benefits all round.”

As part of Care South, Dorset House is passionate about creating engaging activities that support independence, wellbeing and joy every day.

The Gardening Club is already looking forward to its next project and seeing which feathered visitors arrive to enjoy their tasty creations.
