This time of year often brings back fond memories of kitchens filled with warmth, laughter and the comforting smells of baking for family and friends. At Wickmeads, residents recently rolled up their sleeves to recreate some of that magic by making a delicious variation on traditional mince pies.

The activity brought everyone together around the table, sharing stories and skills as the baking began. Paul, our chef, started things off with a demonstration, showing a few handy techniques and tips for preparing the pastries. Not to be outdone, Angela was quick to share another method of doing things that Paul had not thought of before, prompting laughter and the phrase “every day is a school day” to echo around the room.

The mince pies were made using rounds of puff pastry with a small dollop of mincemeat placed in the centre, before being carefully folded over and sealed with a fork. As Hudson, our Activity Lead, helped Eileen with her pies, she firmly told him, “You’re putting too much in.” With a smile, she added, “I have been doing this for years. I am 100 now and I have many more years’ experience.” Everyone around the table laughed as Hudson was playfully put in his place.

Jean then took charge of brushing the pastries with beaten egg, ensuring they were ready for Paul to pop into the oven. The sense of teamwork and shared purpose filled the room, along with plenty of chatter and smiles.

“We can’t wait to have these for our afternoon tea,” said Penny, as the group admired their handiwork. As the baking continued, conversation naturally turned to what else might need to be made before the big day arrives, with plenty of festive ideas shared around the table.

It was a lovely activity that combined creativity, laughter and treasured memories, reminding everyone just how special shared moments can be at Wickmeads.
