A resident at Care South’s Maiden Castle House in Dorchester has been celebrating a lifelong love of writing by sharing his poetry with friends and fellow residents at the home.

Ken has been writing for decades and regularly shares his work with people at Maiden Castle House, where his thoughtful words have become a much-loved part of life in the home. His writing has made such an impression that a friend even created a special picture naming him ‘The Poet of Maiden Castle House’.

A lifelong passion for writing

For Ken, writing is much more than putting words on a page. His poems reflect memories, feelings and moments from throughout his life, often drawing inspiration from experiences that have stayed with him over the years.

His latest piece was inspired by memories of his grandmother’s paraffin lamp, which used to sit in the middle of the family table.

Ken recalls the warm glow of the lamp and the feeling of sitting around it with his family, a memory that remains vivid even many years later.

He wrote:

“My Grandma had a big paraffin lamp and I could feel the lamp light glowing when it was in the middle of the table which we were sitting round. I can still see, and feel, this in my dreams.”

From there, the piece develops into a reflective poem about memory, time and growing older, showing Ken’s ability to turn a simple childhood image into something deeply personal and meaningful.

Memories brought to life through poetry

Ken’s writing has been warmly received by residents and colleagues at Maiden Castle House, with many enjoying the opportunity to hear his latest work.

His poetry is a wonderful example of how familiar memories and lifelong interests can continue to play an important role in later life.

At Care South, residents are encouraged to continue enjoying the hobbies and interests that are meaningful to them, whether that is writing, painting, music, gardening, crafts or something entirely different.

For Ken, poetry provides a way to reflect on his experiences, express himself creatively and share something special with the people around him.

Celebrating individuality at Maiden Castle House

The team at Maiden Castle House takes time to get to know every resident as an individual, including the interests, talents and experiences that have shaped their lives.

Supporting residents to continue doing the things they love forms an important part of Care South’s approach to person-centred care, helping to create opportunities for purpose, enjoyment and connection.

Ken’s poetry has certainly achieved that, bringing people together to listen, reflect and enjoy the power of a beautifully told memory.

And with decades of writing behind him, there may be plenty more still to come from Maiden Castle House’s very own poet.
