Maiden Castle enjoy World Book Day
World Book Day celebrations at Maiden Castle House involved everyone! Residents participated in an intergenerational activity with local childminders and their preschool-aged children. The activities included sensory play, arts and crafts, story time, singing, dancing, and, of course, a home-wide fancy dress event.
One of the residents and poet, Ken, shared a poem with the children called Chugging Along and gifted each of them a handmade book bag filled with goodies.
The staff also joined in the fun with a fancy-dress competition, and everyone had a fantastic day. Resident feedback was very positive, Ken said he thoroughly enjoyed the visit from the children and was grateful for the opportunity to share his love of poetry with them. Other residents commented on the wonderful and creative costumes, reminiscing about their own childhoods.
Ken’s Poem: Keep Chugging On
The little tank engine was chugging along,
And sounding its whistle in the form of a song.
About stone, about granite, about once on a time,
About chugging along on a narrow-gauge line.
About children all waving to help it along,
About children now old, about children now gone.
Though in the eyes of the engine they’ll be children forever,
With the sun always shining and never dull weather.
The generations all mixed, no need to bother,
To tell them apart, to tell one from another.
Perhaps the lines gone but still may retain,
The rhythm and warmth of a chugging old train.
And why should we stop it, this chugging old friend,
No need to bother, let it chug to the end.
To the end, to the end of the line,
Can you see it receding through the distance of time?
And on it keeps chugging to the end of the line,
To the end, to the end, to the end of the line,
And it keeps on chugging to the end of all time.
