13th March 2020

Fern Brook Lodge care home has delivered on promises to change for the better, inspectors have confirmed.

Over the past few months, the Gillingham care home has appointed a new home manager, carried out extensive refurbishments and forged better links with the community.

Now, staff and residents are celebrating after being rated ‘Good’ in all areas for the first time since 2016.

CQC inspectors praised the Gillingham care home for its “improved atmosphere” and “open, friendly and supportive culture”.

They said: “People, relatives and staff spoke positively about the changes at the home and felt there was a joyful atmosphere and improved staff morale.

“The registered manager has a wealth of experience. A staff member told us ‘things have improved… it’s just getting better’.

“Relatives expressed satisfaction with how staff worked with their family members to achieve a good quality of life. One relative said ‘I would recommend anyone to go there’. Another relative told us ‘this is my first experience of a care home and it’s definitely a positive experience’.”

Other comments from relatives featured in the report include: “Staff are very kind and caring and definitely treat people with respect,” and “Staff really care; however busy they are there is always a kind word. Nothing is too much trouble.”

The report also commented on the person-centred approach towards helping residents remain as independent and active as possible. It said: “People were encouraged and supported to maintain contact with those important to them, including family, friends, pets and other people living at the home.

“Activities meetings were held with people so they could help create the activities programme… Relative comments included ‘there is always something happening’ and ‘there are so many activities’.”

‘Passion and committment’

The improved CQC rating comes after Fern Brook Lodge welcomed the Gillingham community to see the improvements at the home.

Home Manager Stanley Haruzivishe said: “I’m so pleased to see the passion and commitment of staff has paid off.

“However, this is only the beginning for Fern Brook Lodge, and we’re looking forward to making this an even better home for those who live and work here, based in the heart of the community.”

Aaron Whitehead, Director of Residential Care at Care South, added: “Everyone at Care South has put in a lot of effort into refurbishing and improving what is now Fern Brook Lodge. I would like to thank them all and look forward to a bright future for the care home.”
