At Beauchamp House, we know that sensory experiences can spark powerful memories and bring simple joy to everyday moments. Earlier this year, residents took part in re-potting mint plants as part of our gardening activities. Since then, the mint has flourished – and recently, it became the centrepiece of a special sensory session.

Alongside the mint, our garden has been blooming with beautiful roses, and we selected one particularly rich and vibrant rose to share with residents. As the scents of fresh mint and rose petals filled the room, smiles followed quickly.

Scents That Tell a Story

Residents were invited to smell the mint and rose, taking their time to explore the familiar fragrances. It was more than just a pleasant activity – it opened the door to memories. Some spoke of gardening in their younger years, tending to mint in the corner of the garden or nurturing rose bushes outside the kitchen window.

“The rose is such a beautiful, rich colour,” one resident said, admiring the bloom.
Others commented on how the smell of mint reminded them of family meals, Sunday roasts, and summer evenings in the garden.

The Power of Simple Pleasures

At Beauchamp House, we focus on Food, Fun and Friendship, but also on those small moments that engage the senses and encourage reminiscence. Whether it’s the scent of a rose, the texture of soil, or the joy of watching something grow, sensory activities are a gentle yet meaningful way to support wellbeing and connection
