A Perfect Summer’s Day

The sun shone brightly as Wickmeads Care Home opened its doors and gardens for this year’s Summer Fayre. Residents, families, friends, and members of the local community came together to enjoy an afternoon full of laughter, entertainment, and community spirit. The event was alive with activity, and everyone was delighted to soak up the cheerful atmosphere.

Stalls and Shopping Fun

A wide range of stalls added to the excitement, with both residents and external stallholders getting involved. Visitors could enjoy everything from hand massages to unique cosmic goods, and even a nostalgic stop at the Avon Lady’s stall, which sparked fond memories of the famous “Ding Dong Avon Calling” adverts. Many guests reminisced about using Avon products over the years, sharing stories with a smile.

Meanwhile, residents and friends sold donated goods, channelling their inner market traders. “Roll up, roll up!” could be heard across the grounds as a lively queue formed, with everyone eager to grab a bargain. Angela, one of our lovely residents, was thrilled with the turnout, saying: “I can’t believe how many people are coming to my stall, it is wonderful, just wonderful.”

Books were also in demand, with Vikki from our admin team making sure visitors browsed the large collection on sale as they arrived.

Food, Ice Cream and Refreshments

No summer fayre would be complete without delicious food, and our talented chefs were on hand to serve freshly grilled burgers and hot dogs from the barbecue. To cool down afterwards, guests flocked to the visiting ice cream van, which was a big hit with its classic 99 Flakes – the perfect summer treat.

Music and Entertainment

The entertainment this year was extra special, as it was all provided by our own talented colleagues. Jo, our Activity Assistant, opened the show with a vibrant set of songs ranging from ABBA to Keane, quickly getting everyone singing along. She was followed by Hudson, our Activity Lead, who wowed the crowds with a mix of classics from Dean Martin to Madness, covering genres from Rock ’n’ Roll to New Wave 80s hits.

“It was so nice to see everyone singing and clapping along to the songs and getting into the spirit of the afternoon,” Hudson said. The atmosphere was full of joy, with residents, staff, and visitors alike joining in the fun.

The Grand Raffle

As the afternoon drew to a close, anticipation built for the Grand Raffle, which this year offered more than 40 prizes. We are hugely grateful to the many local businesses and attractions who generously donated vouchers and gifts, including Rock Reef at Bournemouth Pier, the Aviation Museum, hairdressers, restaurants and cafés. Tracey, our Home Manager, proudly declared, “This is the best raffle we have ever had,” as she and her daughter sold tickets at a roaring pace.

A Fayre to Remember

As the last visitors left with bags full of goodies and raffle prizes, there was a real sense of togetherness and achievement. All monies raised will go directly to the Activity Team, who will use the funds to organise more exciting activities and events for residents over the coming months.

The Wickmeads Summer Fayre was truly a celebration of community, laughter, and sunshine – and we are already looking forward to doing it all again next year.
