Sussexdown honour 100 Squadron
A Tribute to Valor: Celebrating a Hero at Sussexdown care home
Friday night at the bar in Sussexdown saw a heartfelt ceremony as a new plaque was unveiled in honour of Paddy’s late husband. Paddy, one of the beloved residents, had invited her friends to join her in this special commemoration. The evening was filled with warmth as they enjoyed drinks and opened a bottle of champagne to toast the remarkable life of Paddy’s husband.
In May 1943, at the age of 25, he joined the 100 Squadron based in Grimsby. He flew Lancasters and specialized in night-time bombing missions. His logbook is a testament to his bravery, documenting numerous sorties over cities such as Hamburg, Berlin, and Dortmund. One of the most notable entries details the Peenemunde raid on the night of August 17th-18th, 1943. This raid targeted a V1 and V2 rocket research centre, significantly delaying the development of these rocket attacks and impacting the course of the war.
The 100 Squadron’s badge, featuring a distinctive skull and crossbones, now proudly hangs in the bar at the RAF building, serving as a constant reminder of the courage and dedication of the men who served. Paddy’s husband, like many others of his generation, displayed extraordinary valour and made significant sacrifices. The plaque serves not only as a tribute to his memory but also as a beacon of inspiration for all who visit Sussex Down.
The evening was a poignant reminder of the past, celebrated with stories, laughter, and a shared appreciation for the sacrifices made by those who served. Paddy and her friends left the bar that night with a renewed sense of pride and gratitude for the hero whose legacy will live on in their hearts and at Sussexdown.
