Wickmeads Gardening Club Enjoy a Blooming Lovely Day Out

Members of the Wickmeads Gardening Club recently enjoyed a delightful day out thanks to Activity Lead, Hudson, who arranged a special trip with a few surprises along the way. With spring preparation on everyone’s mind, the club had requested a visit to a garden centre to select bulbs and plants for the upcoming season. However, Hudson had something a little extra planned.

As the minibus wound its way through the beautiful Purbeck countryside, the group enjoyed the scenic drive before arriving at Holme for Gardens near Lulworth. None of the members had visited before, so there was a real sense of excitement and anticipation. “You’re in for a real treat,” said Hudson with a smile as they stepped off the bus.

Their first stop was the plant displays, which were bursting with colour and fragrance. The group admired the rich autumnal hues and took in the scent of the blooms. Jean commented that although the displays were beautiful, they were now looking ahead to spring, eager to find bulbs that would brighten Wickmeads’ gardens in the new year.

After a pleasant wander among the displays, thoughts turned to lunch. “Is it time for lunch yet?” came the cheerful call from the group, and off they went to the restaurant. The menu proved a big hit, with Angela remarking on the wonderful selection and Pat admitting she found it hard to choose. Before long, steaming plates of delicious food arrived, and the table was filled with conversation and laughter.

Just as they were finishing up, Hudson announced there was one more surprise. He led everyone outside to a large pond and revealed that he had arranged for them to feed the fish. Lissa, the Activities Assistant, handed out small pots of fish food, and as the first handfuls hit the water, hundreds of fish appeared, splashing and darting eagerly to the surface. “This is wonderful,” said Angela, as Jean added with a smile, “What a lovely surprise! We never quite know what you’re going to have us doing next.”

Once the fish had been well fed, it was time to get back to gardening business. The group explored the spring bulb section, choosing from an array of colours and varieties—perfect for bringing new life to the Wickmeads gardens in March. Purchases made, the ladies headed back to the bus, full of stories to share and excitement for the planting ahead.

As they travelled home, the chatter was filled with plans for the coming season and talk of how much fun the day had been. The trip was a perfect blend of food, fun and friendship, and another wonderful example of how the Wickmeads Gardening Club continues to bring residents together through shared passions and joyful experiences.
