Remembrance Day commemorations at Wickmeads care home
Residents from Wickmeads joined with the local community at the Sunday Remembrance Service at Christchurch Priory. They watched the parade of the armed forces and the wreath laying, before entering the Priory for the Sunday Service. David was in awe at the procession and it even brought a tear to his eye as he remembered members of his family during the war.
On Monday 11th, the residents again welcomed in the local community to join them for a Remembrance Coffee Morning held in the Stour Lounge. Hudson the Activities Lead, led the observations and read “Of the Fallen” poem. This was then followed by the last post and the 2 minute silence. The observation was concluded with a version of the song When the Lights Go On Again, originally sung by Dame Vera Lynn. Ann who had held a position of Mayor a number of years ago, spoke to the room about her memories of when she was in office and the Remembrance Ceremonies that she had to attend.
Loki our therapy cat, made a special surprise visit where he wore a red poppy around his collar. Everyone was then able to view the Remembrance Display which told the story of Dorset during WW1, Battle of Britain and the Purple Poppy which commemorates the animals that helped in the war effort. Hudson had organised the display which also included framed war themed jigsaw puzzles and artifacts such as his grandmother’s gas mask, which many recalled having at the time.
Sadie said this is so poignant and it brings back memories of working in London and the building next to me was bombed and many lost their lives that day. We shall remember them.
