Every resident will have their own nighttime routine.
Your role is to understand those routines and provide the right support without unnecessarily disturbing someone’s rest.
Because fewer colleagues may be working within the home overnight, communication and teamwork are particularly important. Everyone needs to understand their responsibilities, share relevant information and feel confident escalating concerns.
Night-care colleagues also play an essential role in maintaining continuity between the evening and morning teams.
Clear records and a thorough handover help ensure colleagues beginning the next shift understand how each resident has been and whether anything has changed.
What is it like working in a care home at night?
Night shifts have a different atmosphere from daytime care.
The home is generally quieter, with the focus moving towards rest, comfort, observation and reassurance.
Your shift will usually begin with a detailed handover from the evening or daytime team. This will explain how residents have been, highlight any changes and identify anyone who may require additional support.
You may then help residents settle for the night, administer medication and make sure everyone is comfortable.
Throughout the shift, you will complete agreed checks and respond to individual needs.
Some nights may remain calm and settled. On others, several residents may need support at the same time or someone’s health may change unexpectedly.
You will need to prioritise, communicate and work closely with your colleagues.
Night-care roles can be physically and emotionally demanding, particularly during longer shifts. However, they are also rewarding.
You can provide comfort during vulnerable moments, recognise changes that might otherwise go unnoticed and help residents begin the next day feeling safe and well supported.
Helping residents enjoy a comfortable night
A good night’s rest can make an important difference to someone’s physical health, emotional wellbeing and enjoyment of the following day.

Some people like to go to bed early, while others prefer to stay up later. Someone may enjoy a warm drink before bed, listen to music or read for a while. Another resident may have a particular routine that helps them feel settled.

Supporting a comfortable night could include:
- Helping someone change into their nightwear
- Supporting personal care and oral hygiene

A resident may wake because they need the bathroom, feel thirsty, experience pain or become worried about something. Some people may simply be unable to sleep and appreciate friendly reassurance or companionship.
You will respond according to the resident’s individual needs and care plan.
This might involve:
- Providing continence or bathroom support
- Helping someone change position
- Offering a drink or suitable snack
- Supporting prescribed medication
- Checking for signs of pain or discomfort
- Making sure someone is warm enough
- Listening and offering reassurance
- Helping a resident return safely to bed
- Supporting someone who wishes to remain awake
- Escalating a change in health or behaviour
- Recording the support provided
These interactions should never feel rushed or dismissive.
A calm voice, patient approach and familiar presence can help someone feel safe during a time when they may be particularly vulnerable.

This can include helping residents settle, responding to call bells, supporting continence and mobility, completing scheduled checks, recording care and helping residents with their early morning routines.
A Night Care & Support Assistant primarily provides direct care according to residents’ individual care plans.
A Senior Care & Support Assistant combines direct care with additional responsibilities such as administering medication, supervising colleagues, helping allocate duties and acting as a point of escalation.
A Night Care Team Leader coordinates the delivery of care throughout the night.
They supervise the night team, manage priorities, administer medication, respond to incidents, contact healthcare professionals and ensure the morning team receives an accurate handover.
Previous care experience is not always essential for a Night Care & Support Assistant position.
Senior Care & Support Assistant and Night Care Team Leader roles require relevant care experience, including medication and care-planning knowledge.
Entry-level Night Care & Support Assistant positions may not require formal care qualifications.
Senior Care & Support Assistant vacancies may require an NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care and a willingness to work towards Level 3.
Night Care Team Leader positions will normally require an NVQ Level 3 or equivalent.

This can include infection prevention, COSHH awareness, health and safety, manual handling, fire safety, safeguarding, dementia awareness and the safe use of cleaning equipment.

Senior Care & Support Assistants provide day-to-day supervision and may help allocate duties, support colleagues and act as a point of escalation.
