Home Care jobs where every visit matters

Working in home care is about much more than completing a list of tasks.

You are supporting someone in their own home, helping them retain their independence, routines and connection with their local community.

For one client, that might mean helping them get ready for the day. For another, it could be preparing a meal, collecting shopping, providing medication support or simply spending time together over a cup of tea.

Some clients may need short-term support while recovering from illness or returning home from hospital. Others may receive regular care over a much longer period.

Whatever their circumstances, our approach remains the same. We get to know the individual, understand what matters to them and provide support in a way that respects their choices, dignity and independence.

You will also have the reassurance of being part of an experienced Care South at Home team, with colleagues available to provide advice, guidance and support.

What is it like working as a Home Care Assistant?

No two days in home care are exactly the same.

You will travel between clients in your local community, spending dedicated time with each person and providing the support set out in their individual care plan.

Because you regularly support the same clients, you have the opportunity to get to know them properly.

You might learn how someone likes their cup of tea, hear stories about their family, discover their favourite music or understand the small routines that help make their day feel familiar.

Those relationships matter.

They also mean you can often recognise when something has changed, helping us respond quickly if a client needs additional support.

Home care offers a rewarding combination of independence and teamwork. You will spend much of your working day supporting clients independently, but you will always remain part of the wider Care South at Home team.

Helping people remain independent

Independence means something different to everyone.

For one person, it might mean continuing to prepare their own breakfast with a little support. For someone returning from hospital, it might mean gradually rebuilding the confidence to move safely around their home.

Our role is to provide the right level of help without taking away the things someone can still do for themselves.

That means listening, encouraging and adapting the support we provide as someone’s needs change.

For our Specialist Home Care Assistants in particular, this approach forms an important part of reablement support, helping clients work towards measurable goals and greater independence.

You will receive induction, training and ongoing support to help you become confident in your role.

Requirements can vary for Senior and Specialist positions, so always check the individual vacancy.

A Home Care Assistant primarily provides direct support to clients in their own homes.

Senior Home Care Assistants can take on additional responsibilities such as supporting other Home Care Assistants, completing assessments, preparing care plans, coordinating referrals and working with other professionals.

Specialist Home Care Assistants can support clients with more complex needs and people receiving reablement support.

This can involve completing assessments, developing reablement plans, reviewing outcomes and helping people regain confidence and independence following illness, injury or a hospital stay.

eablement is short-term support designed to help someone regain skills and independence.

Instead of automatically doing everyday tasks for a client, our teams encourage and support them to do as much as they safely can for themselves.

The aim is to build confidence and help someone remain as independent as possible.

Many of our Home Care roles involve travelling between clients in the community, so a full driving licence and access to a suitable vehicle will usually be required.
